Seeing as I'm without the USB cord for my camera and can't upload the few street style pictures I've collected over the past few days (for all you new readers out there, there's usually a week-long delay for your picture to get on there, so sit tight!), I'd like to take this opportunity to remind y'all that Nashville's biggest fall fashion show, Scene & Heard, happens TOMORROW, right here on our very own campus. And I Told You To Be Kind

It strikes me as funny that I started off this blog with some form of coherency (talk about the outfit, a little about the weather, a little something about the turmoils of life) but now it has become a place where I mostly dump off-color, streams-of-consciousness commentary. And that can be weird.

But recently, I've been obsessed with Bon Iver's song Skinny Love. You should listen to it! I'm totally addicted.

Anyways. To the post! I am always iffy about tops, because I can rarely find interesting ones I like that don't look completely blouse-y. However, I really liked Jessie's top for it's asymmetrical, cape-like feel. Movement also gave it an added effect, because the fringe kind of swayed in the wind, which was cool. And there were feathers! Suede and feathers! How awesome is that? Pretty awesome, I'd say.

 Lots of Love,
Jenn

A Poor, Bruised Ego

I'm working on a speech right now--it's not turning out so great. Why did I take a public speaking class? Why, oh why, indeed.

Anyhow, I love going to Grins for lunch on weekdays because of the stylish individuals I find there. I always feel more relaxed there, too. Maybe it's the ambiance.

Elizabeth's got on a navy-blue corduroy blazer on (the corduroy is hard to tell from the picture), and I just love it!

Peace,

The Art of Walking Four Inches Taller

I ran into Natalia the other day, a friend from AASA. I was surprised to see her wearing three-four-inch heels so casually. Better yet, apparently these were her "comfortable" pair and she had just changed out of her "real heels." I can only imagine how painful those were. But I admire the bravery of those who can start and end the day propped up on their tiptoes. I only wish I could, but my feet start giving out after the first few hours or so.

Time Treads Slow When Hearts Beat Fast

Oh, how coffee makes my heart thump like a ticking time bomb. I do without it on languid vacation days, but reality shocks me back into the cycle. Sleep is elusive and so are my racing thoughts--they travel too fast for me to pen in, to organize into rank and file.

I am juggling so many things at once. Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I just... dropped everything superfluous. J.K. Rowling once gave this magnificent commencement speech to Harvard (I can't remember which class; can't be bothered to google) about failure, and how it frees you. In failure, you find yourself. I always wonder, "What if... ?" Would I run free like the gypsies in some distant country? Would I work at Jiffy Lube and get my hands dirty with the austerity of the working-class? When successful people see me, would they see a loser? But maybe... I would see them the same way, would pity their plight, the eternal pursuit of a material happiness that keeps us wanting for an absolution that is always delayed, always next time.

Here's something I realize every time I am overwhelmed with the weight of the everyday... Memento mori. In fact, I wake up from 20 minute power naps knowing it, carrying it heavy in my heart. It's a reminder that I have to literally shake off in order to feel normal again. This is why I don't take naps anymore.

Anyways, if there's one thing I like more than interesting names (Sloane), it's interesting patterns.

Set Your Sights Ablaze

A welcome treat to my daily grind nowadays involves running into Diana on the way to class, for lunch, etc. This is for the reason that every outfit she puts together tends to be very photograph-able! And I've got to say that I can't resist blazers--the sharp silhouette, the stark cut of the shoulders and how it tapers like drafted lines down to the waist. Anything angular is good to me.

Hope y'all had a relaxing weekend!

Dudes

The thing about doing fun activities (this is not an understatement, just good innocent fun) on Thursday night is that you get back high on life and friendship and then you quickly realize that it's 1 o'clock and you have class and work tomorrow. As I am woefully low on sleep, I decided that I might as well just elongate consciousness a little more and do some blogging.

Much like I and sleep, this blog is woefully lacking pictures of guys. I think when it comes to being well-dressed (at least in my opinion), Vandy guys are quite polarized. You've got the button ups and Brooks' Brothers folk, or those like this guy here, with the plaid flannel and cool-colored trousers (they were more of a mauve in real life but came out brown here). Actually, today I saw this guy who had the whole oxfords and rolled ankle cuffs corduroy thing going on which was crazy and spectacular but at last minute I got hesitant and let him walk away. Curses!

Well, as the weekend draws near, we let down our walls and our inhibitions. In my case, I'm seriously considering wearing four inch heels to class tomorrow... which is stupid. I would trip and eat it. It's late. I can't think. Good night, lovely people.

Love,

Jenn

The People's Key

Constantly the perspective of the world shifts for me. Through coming of age stories, miracles, cultural revolutions, and most of all great tragedies, every event redefines the way I interpret the nature of our nation and the world. I realized last night, after an immense loss, that none of the rights we hold so dear are necessarily guaranteed for us. This is a terrifying thought. At the same time, it opened my eyes to some valuable truths. Wrong things happen, but we have the power to stop them, and we must act. This isn't exactly what I'd call a political blog, so I won't go into detail. Nevertheless, I'd like to emphasize the importance of our generation's awareness.

Martin Luther King once said "The moral arc of the universe is long, but it bends towards justice."

And another quote, by Whitman, "We must march, my darlings. We must bear the brunt of danger. We, the youthful, sinewy races, all the rest on us depend."

We are the 20 somethings of our world--the future doctors, lawyers, CEOs... but also the thinkers, activists, human rights fighters, and charitable human beings. We will inherit the opportunities of our nation but also the burdens of its wrongs, and then the spotlight of judgment will be directed on us. What we do now and then might change the course of history forever.

On a completely different note, I apologize for the incongruity of this post to the objective of my blog. After last week I tried not to make this blog too personal, but in light of what happened yesterday, it's something I felt compelled to note. But we will be back to our normal scheduling after this post!

Butter Meadow

My apologies for the spotty updating, guys. I've been wrestling real life, getting pummeled to bits by Physics tests, and catching up on what little sleep I can get. Unfortunately, that has led me to put this blog on the back burner for the past few days, but I'm looking forward to coming back with a vengeance (tomorrow) and getting a bunch of good outfit shots!

This is from last week, on Thursday. A bright yellow blazer to bring some sunshine to these dreary days. I'm loving the contrast between the stripes and the color block of yellow. The scarf is also extremely adorable, and I'm a fan of the boots. This was definitely a very well thought out outfit, exactly the type I love to get pictures of! Thanks, Sharon!

Stay healthy!

But Your Beard Someday Might Be

Sometimes, the most bizarre things happen. Other times, I commit bizarre acts of my own volition.

When I was young, my goal was to be the strangest I could be. However, that rarely worked out well, and I ended up learning the art of conforming, and how. I like to think that I have my moments, though, when the tunes in my head just happen to warp and mutate, and I find myself listening to a different song entirely.

I've folded up the weekend like an origami crane and I am flying it to the furnace, to the hookah bar, to the smoke stacks that inundate the sky.

Photographs are by Diana. She is a lovely lamb of a human being.

The Throwdown Continues

Guys, we're winning right now. I love winning.

I photographed Francesca on the way to class on Friday. Her accessorizing ability was so great that I literally footed it across a lawn and chased her down. It was her bag that caught my attention but looking closer, her outfit has so many little details that are completely charming. Love the belt, as well.

Happy Saturday, folks!

Sigh

Today was a great day until I realized that I lost my graphing calculator. Hopefully some kind soul will find it and feel concern (It's black, TI-84, got a green and silver yin yang sticker on the top and a "Nausea" sticker" on the back. It's quite a boring contraption, so you wouldn't want it anyway). Luckily, however, my housemates are darlings and have offered to lend me theirs, but it doesn't change the fact that I constantly lose important things. Either way, it's a big campus, and if it's lost, it's lost. How these things go, isn't it? Also, the "7" key on my keyboard just came loose. Struggling.

On a happier note, it's Thursday! Fall for the Arts is tomorrow and I hope to see you all there, dressed up and ready for folksy times and whatnot. Actually, I'm not entirely sure what Fall for the Arts is, but I'm guessing it has to do with art and autumn, both of which are good with me. And I'm guessing there will be food. At this point, my description of it is really based on a figment of my imagination rather than reality. So... not the most reliable source on this.

All rambling aside, here is a classic Vandy affair! Cowboy boots, jeans, button up, model figure... a winning combination!

Out of The Blue

I've been thinking about a lot of things lately, and have yet to form a conclusion about their implications. A lot of seemingly unrelated troubles have come up to haunt me: health, academic, emotional. But all of it has only really led me to question the nature of bravery.

For the last nine years of my life, I have felt like I needed to depend on someone to bring me happiness. However, such things are often out of one's control, and thus things were never what I considered "perfect." But that's OK. This summer, however, I came to the realization that I will be fine on my own, that I have worth in and of myself, and need nobody else to justify my own existence or talent. Of course, Summer was spent in the idyllic little bubble of my hometown, happily working for a bit of pocket money. Didn't really have to think, you see. Nevertheless, the paradigm shifted... I felt that I was doing the least shameful thing I could do for myself: shucking off the husks of emotional baggage, depending on myself and looking forward to a future that involved only myself (and family). No false hopes, no tepid expectations.

Last night, however, I had my worldview shaken (just a tremor) by a few friends who essentially told me that putting myself out there, despite the consequences, is the best thing I can do--in fact, it is what I must do. Otherwise, I wouldn't be doing justice to the truth or my own wants. Thinking about it, that requires a certain sort of gall, a strength that will outlast countless rejections with ever-new spirit. It's something I used to have. But so does being strong enough to stand on one's own, I think, without relying on relationships with others to define one's own happiness. So that leads me to question, what does it mean to be brave? Is it risking the worst, putting yourself out there and possibly getting burnt, insulted, shamed? Or is bravery the ability to do without the crutches that society creates for us, to carry on without hesitation, to know yourself?

Let me know what you think.

I know this is strangely heavy for a street style blog, but I hope that readers can relate. In case not, I have a lovely street style post for you today. Kelly's skirt was so bohemian and gorgeous, intricate and complex.  I may have also discovered the "Vibrance" adjustment layer feature in Photoshop. Yay, colors!

Stick to Your Spots

Leopard print is like the edgier, stranger, and less winsome cousin of our floral favorites. I never know how I feel about it. Is it tacky? ... or does it have an intrigue beneath its immediate impression? I've seen them done right, and when that's the case, it's always a sight to behold. On the other hand, when the print translates to our level of consumerism, there are times when it makes me cringe. So... I don't know.

Well, I liked these pants on Sarah Catherine. I never noticed it before this year, but she has such an eclectic sense of style! I think leopard print in legging form might actually work for me from now on. I'm definitely a fan of what she's done with them.

11:30 AM

If I had to pick a favorite time of the day, it'd probably be precisely 11:30 am. A month ago, I wouldn't have been awake early enough to see this, but now that I have 9:00 AM classes every day and am stressed beyond immediate relief, I've decided that I really like the look of this time of day. In this dregs of summer weather, it's nice and warm without being swelteringly so, and you've got so much time left to do all the things you need to do. The day just stretches out ahead of you, an unwinding path that you get to mold.

Also, now that I'm using a camera of a semi-regular basis, I'm finally beginning to understand where Diana came from (she wakes up at 6:00 am and sleeps at 10 or 11): the light hours are the most important.

Anyways, I'm assigning 11:30 am as my official time-to-breathe. Now that I have a moment, I decided to post some street style! I met Erica outside Library Cafe in Central Library, on a windy Thursday afternoon. She was such a pleasant person to photograph! No awkwardness or anything. And her maxi dress was colorful like summer dresses should be. I feel like maxi dresses always give people a regal effect, so it's a lovely warm-weather staple.

Head Underwater

Terrible sorry I haven't updated today. Between an impending Bio test and every other weight of the world, I'm swamped and it feels like sinking in quicksand. Nevertheless, that's no reason to pass up on something I enjoy. I'm a little backed up on photos as far as time goes, so these are from last Thursday.

Good night, guys!

Scene & Heard

I need you to get excited, guys, because this year's "Scene & Heard" fashion show is just around the corner! If y'all are unfamiliar, this is an annual fashion show that Vanderbilt Public Relations puts on every fall. The best thing is it integrates a beautiful, thriving part of Nashville culture into our convenient little Vanderbubble. Come and see the collections of prominent local designers; see elegant models strut their stuff (teehee). As you can tell from the picture above, the show is on Saturday, October 1st, and the event starts at 7:00 PM. Make sure to get there early to get good seats! I attended it last year and it was such an amazing experience; the clothing was interesting and beautifully crafted and the models, a few of whom were Vanderbilt students, had such poise. From what I understand, it will be an even bigger, better experience this time around.

Tickets are 10$, but it's well worth it. The money all goes towards Soles4Souls, a Nashville philanthropy.

I had the fortune of sitting in for the casting call this Saturday. Just walking into the room was an experience--it felt like leaving Vanderbilt behind and entering into a space that was distinctly Nashville. Many of the models aren't students here; the mood of the whole process felt refined, thrumming with creative energy. As the raucous tailgates raged outside, the people in here were professional, polite, and extremely charismatic. I was lucky enough to capture a few shots of the prospective models. What surprised me was how confidently they walked and posed in 4+ inch heels, without even missing a beat.

I would definitely have preferred to get a few more shots (and less noisy ones), but my camera and I were having issues. I am very happy with these, however.

Last, but not least, I got an outfit shot of Corinna (sp?), who had on these lovely blue tights that I could not resist. Her colors and beautiful red hair suckered me in. Best of luck to everyone who tried out; I hope to see all of you at the show.

Jenn

A Winning Score

In honor of our 24-21 game last night (two games won in a row! Imagine that!), today's street style post has strong Vandy spirit. The black in the scarf and the happy-yellow skirt is a cute take on our school colors.

Take the Middle Road

What fitting weather for a Friday afternoon--the strains of clouds disappearing once every so often to bathe the world in a lukewarm light. It's a perfect medium given the wide range of weather we've had this past week: anywhere from blustery hot to a cold, wet downpour. It is a tempered conclusion to a week of extremities.

But I guess the beginning of Fashion Week (a more accurate term would be Fashion Month) genuinely marks the onslaught of a new season and all its fashion staples as well. I mean, we have officially shifted from S/S '11 to A/W '12. On the one hand, I'm extremely wistful for New York. If only I had the time and hard cash; it would be like living a dream. On a more realistic tone, however, I'm excited for all the good fall-like things to come. Coats, scarves, boots, layering cardigans and beanies, as well. I've noticed a lot of color-blocking in coats, and I'm trying to decide between a bright, solid color, or the heritage patterns that seem to be in right now.

I was charmed and inspired by Rachel's creative choice in cover-up. Her letter man style jacket had me running after her, begging to take her picture. I love the colors in her ensemble, the red and white of her jacket paired with her lovely blue heels. But she also chose the right neutral basics to emphasize her colors.

If I can't make a decision on a coat by the time autumn comes to a head, I might just take a leaf out of Rachel's book!

Whistle While You Work

Sometimes, menial labor is exactly what you need after a day of straining your mind. It's nice to lose yourself to the repetition, to gain an easy rhythm of washing dishes, or mixing media. There's solitude, for one, just you and your own thoughts, a reason for daydreaming. Also, for those of you who do menial work on a schedule, you know there's nothing else that you "should" be doing at the time, no stressing out about the homework you "could" be spending time on. I mean, you're there already, right?

Maybe I'm not relating to anybody here. But really, I think anybody who is stressed out by the verbosity of their reading or the density of their work should just take some time out to do something simple, mindless, and constructive. It could be anything from folding your clothes to rearranging your books, just as long as you keep busy while letting your brain take a mini-vacation. Afterward, you've also accomplished something!

Well, when I'm not keeping busy I can usually be found near food. On Tortellini Tuesday I took an outfit shot of Audrey, who had this great pair of trousers. Paired with her boots, they are reminiscent of riding pants, which I'm a definite fan of. I've also developed quite a liking for leather jackets, especially this one.

Morningside

Hope y'all are wide awake and eager to embark on the new adventure that is today! Have your coffee cups at the ready; you're gonna need them.

The geometric print of the sweater was what caught my attention, but I quite like that scarf as well.

Repose

Wednesdays are always a rush of activity. Everything moves fast and I'm constantly supposed to be somewhere else, doing this, presenting that. I haven't much to say today, merely in the process of catching my breath.

You'd Better Hold On Tight

The rain persists, but perhaps the saddest part of these last two days is that I've lost two pairs of tights. Sometimes I think that tights are designed to fail, as the slightest misstep results in a run, or a hole, and soon enough you're sporting patchy legs that look like they've been crawling through razor blade grasses of the Everglades. For their price, they are evanescent objects. But more than that, their existence in itself is impractical. Whether seven dollars or fifty nine, they rip all the same. It's a shame I love them so much, and that they look so nice. And of course I'll still be wearing mine; it just puts a bit of a damper, is all.

Anyhow, on the subject of tights, I walked past Paige today on the way to lab and went head over heels for hers. They look amazing paired with those boots. I sure hope they're doing alright in this fabric-snagging world that we live in. Paige's pre-fall layering was also really fun and different, which is something I love seeing around campus.

All These New Spaces

Guys, I know the weather is horrid right now, and the rain spits down in irreverent angles, but I want you to know that there's a beautiful light at the end of this tunnel damp, leaking tunnel.

Tomorrow, Zara will start shipping to the USA! Now, I'm sure you've all heard of Zara before and maybe even have a few stores located in your hometown. But sometimes, there are sizes and items that you just can't find in-store, and it's utterly heart-shattering. For example, when the beautifully striped seer-sucker blazer went on sale, the only sizes available in store were XL and XXL. Venturing online, all I could do was look woefully at the pictures. No size selection, no add to cart button, no field for errant coupon codes! It was like being on the wrong side of the looking glass. But all of that's about to change.

I've already put a few things on my to-buy list. It seems that I either like really tacky, bright and audacious prints, or duly colored basics. It's color bipolar-ism. But either way.

I've been planning a jaunty menswear look which this particular pleated trouser would be perfect for. I like the way it flares out a bit at the hip and tapers down towards the ankles, ending with a cuff. I'm thinking purple oxfords and men's socks for the finish.

In addition, how awesome would this newsboy cap be with the whole ensemble? Menswear with a girlie twist. Maybe a simple hounds tooth or striped choice would be better. I don't know. Loud florals are more fun, however.

Speaking of florals, how is this for loud?

And lastly, I love the structure and feel of this miniskirt. I am a sucker for burnished gold. It's so blatantly and perfectly Vandy.

What are the pieces you've got your eyes on?

The Usual Fare

What you usually see people wearing on campus during a rainy day consists of rain boots, black leggings, and some shape or form of a windbreaker. If you're a guy, it's about the same fare, minus the rain boots and leggings (well, I hope). Everybody's all bundled up and hiding under their umbrellas, cocooned from the world and all its miserable precipitation. While that is all well and good and even encouraged, nobody looks very approachable!

Well, Madison from my speech class was a bit of an exception to the rule, as she dressed like the weather couldn't phase her! She looked very put-together and not at all frazzled, but it was the shoes that finally got me, as is usually the case. They were really, really shiny in person.

Ta,

Jenn

What Lovely Weather We're Having

Strange to think that just a few days ago we were all sweltering in our sundresses and dress shirts and now it is raining with a quiet but sturdy conviction. Though the rain doesn't smash heavy at the ground, it stops for nobody. It's a nice change but a sudden one, with a near thirty degree drop in the weather. I like the juxtaposition.

When I was small, the flow and ripples of water always amazed me. Shallow creeks and rivers were my favorite places, just to watch the clear water flow cleanly over rocks. The bends and undulations of the current itself made it seem like multiple streams intertwining as they crept along. The rainwater moves like that now, as well, along the sidewalks of steep streets. As I finally have rain boots (this time last year, I would have been wading along, barefoot), I can splash through them at my leisure, which is quite a delight.

Today I photographed Margaret, partly because I liked her boots and partly because I thought the trench coat was something I thought I wouldn't be seeing until mid-October. She was quite prepared for the weather, whereas I was not prepared to take a good photo, so it came out a little blurry.

I like the shape of the trench coat anyway, so I'm keeping it!

New Street Style post, courtesy of Diana! She's taking over the blog. We wouldn't have it any other way, though.

Charming red flats, their vibrant color remind me of Dorothy's shoes. The world spins on, but I wonder what's going on in Emerald City?

The Weekenders

The weekends are for the lucky souls who know how to take advantage of those precious seventy two hours, how to maximize their output from life. They're risk-takers, rule-breakers, and boat-rockers who are as focused as they are frivolous, capable as they are capricious. In the whirlwind of life they swirl along at the ready--No, in fact, they're the storm. The love freely, choose certainly, and speak loudly, with conviction. The bookshelves of their bones are racked heavily with experience, yet none of it weighs them down.

I, on the other hand, am placid water. I let time run through me, soundly. Idly doodling at my window, I'll wonder why my homework's not done yet, why the sun shines so vividly, as if it has something to prove. I will plan little plans that never get executed and they sit in little piles of shredded paper as noon turns to sundown and time flushes through me again.

This morning the birds chirped soundlessly and I woke up to my lamp-light in a drowse of "What time is it?" Diana was next door and we took some pictures, of simple clothing for simply boiling weather. The heat is rigid and white-hot, one last Hurrah for the summer to make before the curtain call. An explosion of "Here is What I can do;" it does have something to prove.
