The Passage of Time

During my time in Atlanta this winter break I really came to feel how precarious are the tenuous threads that connect us to a place. Before leaving for college I'd been there almost 18 years of my life. A mere twelve months away (cumulatively) and already it felt like a strange destination, like a place I never really knew. What's worse is that I hardly know Nashville except for maybe the square mile in which I live and attend classes... in fact, it's probably a smaller area than that. So, after a bout of childhood, the tethers that connect us to our hometown are suddenly cut, and it's not until then that we realize we're just floating in space, belonging nowhere until we decide to root ourselves down. If we even can. I know this sounds all "Garden State"-esque, but it does come with a silver lining.

It's the people that count! Winter break would have seemed so bleak if it were not for my friends, some of whom came home from college and some who live in Atlanta indefinitely. We took advantage of our short time together and went on a few trips, got a few tattoos. You know. Casual.

Here are our photos. A few include fashion details and some quirky places around Macon, Georgia and Atlanta.

What Lovely Weather We're Having

Strange to think that just a few days ago we were all sweltering in our sundresses and dress shirts and now it is raining with a quiet but sturdy conviction. Though the rain doesn't smash heavy at the ground, it stops for nobody. It's a nice change but a sudden one, with a near thirty degree drop in the weather. I like the juxtaposition.

When I was small, the flow and ripples of water always amazed me. Shallow creeks and rivers were my favorite places, just to watch the clear water flow cleanly over rocks. The bends and undulations of the current itself made it seem like multiple streams intertwining as they crept along. The rainwater moves like that now, as well, along the sidewalks of steep streets. As I finally have rain boots (this time last year, I would have been wading along, barefoot), I can splash through them at my leisure, which is quite a delight.

Today I photographed Margaret, partly because I liked her boots and partly because I thought the trench coat was something I thought I wouldn't be seeing until mid-October. She was quite prepared for the weather, whereas I was not prepared to take a good photo, so it came out a little blurry.

I like the shape of the trench coat anyway, so I'm keeping it!

Summer's Perished, Heralds Our Birth

Hello everyone! As the lazy summer months dwindle to a close and we all return to our respective habitats, the changing of the season marks new beginnings, revived ambitions. A new journey, at least for those of us who still follow "school year" schedule. It's hard to believe that Iris (pictured below) will be settled into her dorm room, ready for Junior Year, by the time this post hits the ground running. I mean, by the time this blog hits the ground running. Another new beginning, right here! Imagine that.

Last night, I had the fortune of eating dinner with my childhood friends before we all went our separate ways. While dinner certainly didn't feel solemn or wistful, it hit me that it might be the last time all four of us would be together. At least for a while.

Therefore, I couldn't resist snapping a street-style photo of Iris, even though this isn't Nashville. Either way, I quite like the combination of her rustic accessories and her dress's colorful pattern.

I'll be headed to Nashville in a few weeks time, ready to face classes and friends and legions of stylish folk all waiting to be photographed. But first, Savannah!

I'm excited for all of it. Most of all, I'm excited for this blog--I want to do it justice. Hope all of you folks are enjoying your summer.

Much Love,
Jennifer
